GSB ~ Summer Weaks 2 ~ 8-30-09
GSB - Summer Weaks 2 - 8-30-09
late report..
after Danny blew through - I wasn't really sure as to what the day would hold...dark clouds and fog in Am..wind in the trees..could be snotty..
What ever it was I was back to plan A - weakfish.. that 50/50 is always there..(I think that's what I like about it.)
to the ramp @ 6:45 ..doesn't open til 7am..still No sunrise today - just grey.. so I waited ..
...a maint. worker came by about 2 mins. later and let me in early..nice. No charge either - even better..1st one @ the ramp..nice X2
------------------------------
Water 73 - much cooler
air: 60s am ~ 80 pm..
high @ 7am ish
wind.. light 5 E/NE ..then nada ..then 5 N ..then nada.. @ 2pm turned on 10 S and building ..
------------------------------
on the water @ 7am - not many if any boats...."oh yeah WICC this weekend.." and it was calm and flat ..full throttled it .. nice X3
Still not sure if the storm churned it up too much..
stopped by my 1st spot nada.. just stayed for one drift.. full throttled it to the next spot..the only other boat out was there..exchanged pleasantries....1st drift.. 5 min in ..bam! Fish on..nice fish too..WEAK.. 21" .. great now I can relax...marking fish too..
2nd drift .. 15 min later . bam! fish on..20" Weak ..2 in the box.. Great!
3rd drift...15 more min...yep.BAM another 21" weak ..3 in the box in 45 min..
4th drift ....short 14"..
went to redrift and the other boat was close ..So quiet I could have hear alarm clock going off on shore..so we talked -- he was just fishing plastics..didn't have any bait..so I offered him my extra. Nice guy ..We even shared the same home town. ..
a few more drifts . bam another fish -- keeper as well..21.5" weak.. I was ear - to ear smiles....drag singing hits..
.. 2 other boats showed - all solo as well..all very nice. courteous..we all ended up sharing that bait..passed from one to the next,a few of the the other guys had some keepers as well........ it wasn't an all out bite....but it was mostly all weaks..and for me.....many,many more keepers then shorts~ sweet.
had my limit by 10:30am ....now it's go home and do yard work or..(yeah..yard work..ha..right) stay with this great weakfish bite I have been looking for...I would end up doubling my limit and then some..it just happened to be my day.... had a sinking fly line set up with me , so for the last hour I tried Fly fishing for them..but no hits..
Stayed til 2pm..when the wind and waves started getting snotty/rocky.. tried to clean the fish..but need to head to port to do it ..just too snotty.. slow ride back as well..
cleaned the fish and home by 5pm.. a great - GREAT day.. a personal best.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
total:+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
16 Keeper Weaks ( 6 kept -10 released ~ one@ 17", the rest were almost all 21", two were 26" )
7 Short Weaks ( 13-15")
1 Snapper 9"
3 Blue claws
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ almost no boats all day until the sun started to show @ noon...then a few ..but not that many..
~ Light wind , clam conditions,Overcast skies + lighter boat traffic really made my day.
another day to hit replay in your head...over and over and over..a special day indeed.

Summer Weaks 2009 - GSB 8-23-09
GSB -- Summer Weaks '09 - 8-23-09 -- late report..
After missing my window for weaks yesterday...and being that the weather stations were scaring people away from the shore...( empty N-shore yesterday)
I was determined to get in some weakfishing ..I had to go and try..- last year the Battle on the Bay ..made it mayhem on the bay for fishing
to the ramp by 7:00am.....No Charge. good thing as I only had $8 bucks.. just enough cash ...next good thing.. the Ramp was empty..not one trailer..( last year it was full)... 3rd good thing in was calm as glass... now if I could find some weaks. I have been pretty blanked this year on weaks.. except for 2 small Peconic weaks..
------------------------------------------
Low @ 8ish
water 80-82
air 72 am - 83 pm
wind: mostly zero -with slight breezes NW..until 2pm - Sw @ 10
------------------------------------------
I couldn't believe the beauty of the sky and water this morning...I have never been on the GSB when it was this flat and calm...just me and the ferry..It was great!
it took until about 11am for a good amount of traffic to build and compared to last year it was minimal...yep weather forecasts kept people away again..
---hit a few spots by and had bites but nothing coming up...finally hooked a fish .@ 9:30..small Fluke...20 min later an Old tattered Gym Sock..
great.. drift was less than 0.5 mph..( and would stay that way til 2pm) OLd sock time to move.. Went to a New spot.. ..nada..ok looked @ the map..if I were weaks where would I be..hmm.there?...made another move..
5min in 1st drift.. Fish on --King fish.
2nd drift.. small WEAK - 14" GREAT+++! Now I can relax..
Just kept @ it......bam.. another small.. Weak 13"
Set up ..for about the 10th drift.. just as the sinker hit the bottom..bam . nice Keeper Weak! 18".
it was slow @ best but I was shore I could find at least a few more....
did find a few more including another keeper @ 19"..
really died by 2:30...moved back towards the ramp and cleaned the fish while drifting...just one more Kingfish and bunch of Blue claws
done by 4:15pm ( Ramp now Full)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Total:
2 Keeper Weaks (18", 19")
8 short Weaks ( 13"-15")
2 Kingfish (9",14")
2 Blues (15",17")
10 Snappers ( 9")
1 Short Fluke (15")
20++ Blue claws ( one huge male about 9-10"wide)
1 old sock
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Not as many boats as expected..but still many too close boats..and many super fast Speed boats around - I saw one doing over 100+mph..not even touching the water..
- Beautiful day.. chop didn't start until about 2pm ..other than that it was pretty calm.
- Fish not in usual spot..lucky to find em..
weak for weaks kept the largest 2 for the table + 1 blue - always takes me forever to filet..but at least this time I gave myself time to do it rather than last minute @ 10pm...under lights and fighting the bugs..Nice breezy cool place to be

Last night stayed on the fish up until sunset -- a 12 hr day and I was just into fish blitzing on the Fly for the 1st time..hit the bow light on that I thought I fixed...nada.. had to leave a blitz ..
so found the true culprit today.. the bulb..it fell apart as I went to inspect it..the 2 end fell of.. a $2.99 fix.. nice..

Peaconic Bay -- Silky Shark - 8-1-09
picked this guy up on a 2/0 porgy hook intended for a weakfish.. about 3' long..
ID
A large, slender shark, the silky is characterized by a moderately extended, rounded snout, a relatively sloping first dorsal fin with a blunt apex that originates behind the free margins of the pectoral fins, a small second dorsal fin with an extremely long free rear tip (more than 2x the height), and a low inter-dorsal ridge. Pectoral fins are long and slender, typically with dusky tips.
