GSB ~ 3 day Summer WEAK end ~ 8-27/28/29-10
GSB ~ Summer WEAK end ~ 8-27/28/29-10
quick report - 3 days weak fishing --
Seeing the line of hurricanes building in the Atlantic - Danielle, Earl ( which could be very bad ) ( last year this time ..TS Danny killed a few of my trips) plus with the WICC this weekend decided to hit the GSB now while the weather is stable and some what known..
saw many trailers headed North - while I went south.....
You know the rules: ONE Weak makes the trip a success.. ( have been 100% this year - which is just great..usually 50/50 by now...there's still time..if I get away with 75/25 it would be fantastic.)
====================================================================================================
Day 1 - 8-27-10 longest day
====================================================================================================
break of day @ the ramp and ready to roll as the sun just peaked over the east sky - bright , beautiful and clear - 6:15 am
---------------------------
wind Nw @ 5-10 light 1' chop -- Great wind - perfect drift ( .5 - .7 mph)
Low @ 7:30ish..
air - 60 am 79 pm
water 69 - 74
-------------------------
had the 1st fish on @ 6:45 - WEAK !!! nice little 13" ...success!
then a short fluke - (15")
so nice and quiet --- well worth a day off
.. kept hitting fish consistently for a few drifts...had 13 shorts early...then a Keeper ZZZZZZ around 7:45 ~ (22.25")
Sweet.
had another 15 min later (22") ..yeah!
9 am----> bite died..like a switch..then the wind started to blow @ 10am stiff NW..
drifted around...and around..and around...searching -moving - little fluke (8") ... ..snapper.... .shells...... kept telling myself they are still here...just got to wait it out..moving around..around.. 4 hrs ! of nada..
finally @ Noon -- bite picked up for few -- had 5 more shorts and another Keeper (21") - glad I waited it out..
so happy and satisfied ... done @ 2pm..
-----------------------------------------------
Total:
3 Keeper Weak ( 21", 22" ,22.25") kept the biggest = 3.5lbs
18 Short Weaks ( 12"-15")
2 Fluke ( 8" , 15")
1 Snapper ( 10")
3 shells
not one Blue claw.....hmmm
------------------------------------------------
- light traffic all day - I think it's why the bite was good @ noon..-that's also why I waited it out..
===================================================================================================
Day 2 - 8-28-10 short day - best day
===================================================================================================
same thing x2 - it's almost the same day as yesterday---->.break of day @ the ramp and ready to roll as the sun just peaked over the east sky - bright , beautiful and clear - 5:50am
---------------------------
wind N - NW @ 5-10 light >1' chop -- Great wind - another perfect drift ( .6 - .9 mph)
Low @ 8:30ish..
air - 61 am 80 pm
water 69 - 74
-------------------------
1st fish on @ 6:50 - small fluke.. and small weak( 13") NICE !!!! back on the fish.. a few shorts on the same drift..4.. much better bite today..
Very Next drift ... Hooked into a nice fish -- zzzzz light drag going off... thought alright nice weak... -- but it was a Keeper fluke -- nice surprise - considering the only fluke I see over here are @ the most 15"... same drift 15 min later..Had a Northern Kingfish ( 14.5").. 1st one this year -- I was hoping to see a few mixed in.
--- very productive next few drifts -- double header ...but all shorts... now creeping towards then past 8am... feeling it was now or never..decided to make a move away from short fish to find the keepers...
Great move ! Bam !!!!!!!!! 1st fish on ..with in a minute of setting up - nice Keeper Weak ( 22.125" ) - hit like a freight train..
moved back to redrift --- same thing Bam-- fish on ! another nice keeper ( 21.25").....and as I was releasing him -- the rod I just put in the holder goes off...zzzzzzzz...
nice fish.....well actually it's 2 fish .. another double header -- 1 keeper and 1 short! yeah..
it was a good thing I moved -- because right after that it was a pick...one here and there...
decided to leave em be for the rest of the day Plus the traffic turned on as did the wind..by 10...un hooked a short @ 10:45am and headed back in to clean the fish..( kept the Fluke - King and large weak)
-----------------------------------------------
Total:
3 Keeper Weak ( 21.25", 21.875" ,22.125") kept the biggest = 3.25lbs
16 Short Weaks ( 11"-15")
1 Northern Kingfish ( 14.5")
1 Keeper Fluke ( 21.125")
2 Fluke ( 12" , 14")
2 Snapper ( 10")
4-5 shells
funny - but not one Blue claw again........
------------------------------------------------
=====================================================================================================
Day 3- 8-29-10 slow - worst day
=====================================================================================================
same thing x3 ----> break of day @ the ramp and ready to roll as the sun just peaked over the east sky - bright , beautiful and clear - 5:50am
---------------------------
wind ZERO for the AM - terrible drift...then too much wind by 10 am....NW @ 15+ too fast ( 1.5mph)
Low @ 9:30ish..
air - 65 am 86+++ pm
water 69 - 74
-------------------------
it was very calm....TOO calm... No drift ...Zero.. shoot,,,
- well there's fish here....so it took a little longer to get a fish -- probably too long -- I just knew it would shut off again by 10...
Just needed one Weak...finally got one @ 7:45...success... Now the Crabs showed up...I even saw quite a few on top swimming by..
2 more short weeks here and there plus 3 snappers....
wind didn't pick up until 8:20--- a little late but still enough to hook a Keeper Weak almost right away ( 17.25") - released
really struggled .. after that... only 4 more shorts ..some fluke too..but that was it.. wind really turned on hard - as did the Boats!..crazy S- shore boaters..
surprised that picked up 2 shorts right before noon,,,
but it was over.. done @ Noon as well
it was fun while it lasted... hopefully Earl will miss us....way EAST.
-----------------------------------------------
Total:
1 Keeper Weak ( 17.25") 16 Short Weaks ( 11"-15")
7 Short Weaks ( 13"-15")
3 Fluke ( 13", 13", 14")
4 Snappers ( 10-14")
4-5 shells
12-13 Blue claws some big males n Females.. the females didn't mind being picked up as much as the males..
------------------------------------------------
it was fun while it lasted... hopefully Earl will miss us....way EAST.
Considering the how sparse they have been this year I have been very Lucky to find some Weaks.

GSB ~ Summer Weaks P1 2010 ~ 8-21-10
GSB ~ Summer Weaks P1 2010 ~ 8-21-10
Prepped during mid week for highly anticipated weakfish search
bait thurs..prerig n boat prep Friday...out @ the crack of dawn Sat..
on the water @ 6:09am - perfect...calm wind and a bright sun just breaking...1' slight chop
----------------------------------------
air 65 am - 80 pm
water 74-77
wind Ne for an hour ..then building SE to 17-18 by noon
high @ 9:30
----------------------------------------
the rules are 1 weak , just 1 ....and the trip is a success
dropped down the the 1st rig ....and waited for any sign....had a few bites...good..
then a 1st fish???????...WEAK ALRIGHT!!! now I can relax ...all that build up released.
quick pict and off he went ..tiny 13"
kept @ it ..and managed 8 more weaks by 8am. started to slow after this as expected...many boats building as the battle in the bay time trial boats started to build early..
pretty rocky all morning .......around 9 and the 10th fish.....had a nice hit and set the hook on the only keeper of the day 19" ..nice fight and the drag was light..a little too light...ok alot too light ..but I wasn't about to mess with it until after I netted the fish.
picked away @ 5 more weaks ...and some other fish...and shells ....but the bite really died past 10am..last one @ 1030am...but kept @ it look for more all over..
finally called it @ 11:45 as the waves got short n nasty 3' ....slammed my way back to the ramp...so much so that my Fillet table smashed through the Stainless steel stern rod holder popping the tube clean off...welds gave out after 6 years of smashing up n down..
boats everywhere...as I thought it could be a while trying to get back on the ramp....and to my surprise - I was the only one there....Just in time too..as I rolled up a convoy of 10 trailers was just starting to pull into the lot...also had an ambulance and open ready with many rescue boats there on stand by..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
total:
1 Keeper Weak ( 19")
15 Short Weaks ( 13-15.5") most 14"
2 short Fluke ( 14-15")
1 Snapper Blue ( 14")
3 Oyster shells
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- stopped by the market and picked up some top necks to go with my weak....yum
--- tons of biplanes an WW2 planes around all morning..
---only boat fishing ...every other boat was racing around...one other guy but that was 2 noon and I think he was sleeping as he drifted by..
Pd
Replaced the Rod holder the next day...put the wrong degree ( 15) in @ 1st --- then back to the store for the (30) degree...Attwood SS holder - nice.
